El Capitan Dmg Reddit

I have Mac Pro 2,1. Trying to upgrade to El Capitan from OSX Lion 10.7.5 using Pikify App. To do so, El Capitan must be in the Apps folder. Downloaded El Capitan.dmg directly from Apple website (6.5GB). Ran it and now have the El Capitan.mpkg file. However, the installer won't allow El Capitan. OS X El Capitan remains available for Mac computers that can't upgrade to macOS High Sierra, or that need to upgrade to El Capitan first. El Capitan probably needs the most prep steps of any OS X system install. Specific steps for El Capitan in that support article, and you have to change your system clock before you begin the install of El Capitan. Boot to the Installer, at the menu screen, open the terminal, enter date, then press enter. Good luck trying to go to Yosemite or Mavericks. I had an El Capitan DMG a while back but erased it as I tried to do the same thing you are doing and it failed. I'd say just search around for the DMG file. It'll be on some shady looking sites but I've had success before with clean ones. Using the DMG download of OSX 10.11 El Capitan (see above) and making a bootable USB-installer with Diskmaker X I finally managed to install 10.11 without installing 10.6.8 Snow Leopard first! I don't know if I was refused to do this before because I had either tried to install it on a partition on a drive or because I named the partition prior.

Check compatibility

Safari downloads the following older installers as a disk image named InstallOS.dmg or InstallMacOSX.dmg. Open the disk image, then open the .pkg installer inside the disk image. It installs an app named Install [Version Name]. Open that app from your Applications folder to begin installing the operating system.

Are you trying to make a bootable installer? Do you have the El Capitan installer downloaded from the App Store? You cannot make a bootable DVD but you can make a bootable flash drive.


Bootable USB Installers for OS X Mavericks, Yosemite, El Capitan, and Sierra


First, review this introductory article: Create a bootable installer for macOS. Second, see this How To outline for creating a bootable El Capitan installer. Simply replace the Terminal command with the one from the preceding article by copying it into the Terminal window. You will need an 8GB or larger USB flash drive that has been partitioned and formatted for use with OS X.


Drive Partition and Format

  1. Open Disk Utility in the Utilities' folder.
  2. After Disk Utility loads select the drive (out-dented entry with the mfg.'s ID and size) from the side list.
  3. Click on the Erase tab in the Disk Utility toolbar. Name the drive, 'MyVolume'. <---- IMPORTANT!
  4. In the drop down panel set the partition scheme to GUID. Set the Format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.)
  5. Click on the Apply button and wait for the Done button to activate. When it does click on it.
  6. Quit Disk Utility.


Create Installer

Open the Terminal in the Utilities' folder. Choose the appropriate command line (in red) depending upon what OS X installer you want. Paste that entire command line from below at the Terminal's prompt:


Command for macOS High Sierra:

sudo /Applications/Install macOS High Sierra.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/MyVolume --applicationpath /Applications/Install macOS High Sierra.app

Command for macOS Sierra:

sudo /Applications/Install macOS Sierra.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/MyVolume --applicationpath /Applications/Install macOS Sierra.app

Command for El Capitan:

sudo /Applications/Install OS X El Capitan.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/MyVolume --applicationpath /Applications/Install OS X El Capitan.app
