  • In this quick tutorial, I show you (in under 1 minute!) how to double space in Microsoft Word. This works for all versions of Word, both on the PC and the Ma.
  • Word’s automatic spelling and grammar checker will now flag anything other than one space after a period as wrong, that red squiggly line declaring double-spacing between sentences grammatically.

If you are working in Microsoft Word 2010, you should follow these steps to set up double-spacing. Select (highlight) text if you have already typed some lines. If not, go to the next step. Click on the Page Layout tab. Go to the Paragraph section. You will see a small arrow in the bottom left corner.

You can change the amount of space between your lines and paragraphs to give documents structure and improve readability.

Change Line Spacing

  1. Select the paragraph or paragraphs you want to adjust.
  2. Click the Line and Paragraph Spacing button.

    3. A list of line spacing options appears. The options here range from 1.0, which adds no extra space between lines, to 3.0, where the spacing for each line is triple that of a single-spaced line.

  3. Select a spacing option.

    For more spacing options, select Line Spacing Options to open the Paragraph dialog box.

The spacing between the selected lines is changed.

Change Paragraph Spacing

If you want to add space above or below the paragraph, adjust the paragraph spacing.

  1. Click the Paragraph dialog box launcher.
  2. Adjust the settings in the Spacing group.
    • Before: Adds space above the paragraph.
    • After: Adds space below the paragraph.
  3. Click OK.

Additional space will be added before or after the selected paragraph.

You can quickly add or remove 12 pts of spacing before or after the selected paragraph by clicking the Line and Paragraph Spacing button on the Home tab, then selecting Add/Remove Space Before Paragraph or Add/Remove Space After Paragraph.

When typing in Microsoft Word, you might need to change the line spacing, depending on the document's style. The steps to enable double spacing in differ slightly between versions. Consequently, you may need to use some intuition to adapt them for older versions. To proceed, decide which situation applies to you, then follow the steps in that section.

Tip

Use the keyboard shortcuts Ctrl+1 to single space, Ctrl+2 to double space, or Ctrl+5 to set the spacing to 1.5 line spacing on any line, paragraph, or all highlighted text.

Note

When pressing Enter, it starts a new paragraph with extra space between the two paragraphs. If you want to go to the next line without starting a new paragraph, press Ctrl+Enter.
