Mac OS X is an operating system by Apple Inc. It is a conglomoration of NeXTSTEP, A/UX, and Mac OS 9. It is based off the unix kernel and provides compatibility with X11. It features a new theme called Aqua which replaces Platinum from Mac OS 8 and 9. The Mac OS X Server 10.3 Panther is an operating system that was designed, developed, and sold by Apple from 2003 to 2005 alongside Apple’s server computers. So, I’ve been amiss these last few days, but with good reason. I’ve been acquainting myself with my new pet Panther. I know, my last major post to the page was one regarding my love for iTunes and all things $0.99 (hey, i’m a cheapo, ok?) but, trust me, I was not one of the blind faithful who thought it was completely ok waiting in line for hours on end simply to pay $130 for some cool new features. Regardless of criticalacclaim.

In any event, I think that the new features and capabilites of the system are great. I am running it on a G3 900MHz iBook with 384 MB RAM and there is just a noticeable uptick in performance. Let it suffice to say that, once installed (I installed it with the UNIX file system, nostalgia as a former UNIX user; read:GEEK) and the whole thing just runs swimmingly. Exposé is a lifesaver for those of you working on a laptop, my little 12″ definitely benefits from it. In short, taking away many, if not all of the sources of my frustration in dealing with macs that I’ve had in the past, I am really starting to see the benefits of my Mac and, as such, have really begun to use it a lot more.
